I, a boy, stood
By a dirt road, in first dark, and heard
The great geese hoot1 northward.

I could not see them, there being no moon
And the stars sparse2. I heard them.

I did not know what was happening in my heart.

It was the season before the elderberry3 blooms,
Therefore they were going north.
The sound was passing northward.

Tell me a story.
In this century, and moment, of mania4,
Tell me a story,
Make it a story of great distances, and starlight.

The name of the story will be Time,
But you must not pronounce its name.

罗伯特·佩恩·沃伦（Robert Penn Warren，1905~1989），堪称美国当代文坛上一位少见的全能作家。他曾以小说《国王班底》（All The King’s Men）获普利策奖；作为评论家，他是新批评派的主干之一，他与克林斯·布鲁克斯合著的《理解小说》（Understanding Fiction）、《理解诗歌》（Understanding Poetry）等书，成为美国各大学必备的教科书。1979年他以《今与昔，1976~1977年诗选》（Now and Then, Poems 1976-1977）再夺普利策奖。1986年，又被美国国会图书馆授予“桂冠诗人”的称号，成了美国文学史上第一个桂冠诗人。
《给我讲一个故事》是沃伦晚年时创作的《奥都本：一个幻象》其中一首，诗风与其早年相较风格大变。故事总是以“很久以前”开始，说故事的人总是父母，听故事的人总是孩子，惟一在变的只剩下说故事和听故事的时间。本诗以简单的笔触引领出从容、深邃的意境，将对生命的领悟和思考寓以亲切而隽永的特色，是能凸现大师风范的代表作。
