巧译英语复数名词

英语名词复数汉译时，要根据情况用汉语习惯，在该名词前、后加上恰当的词。

一、在该名词前、后加“们”、“批”、“诸位”、“众”等词。如：

Scientists have always wanted to know more about space.

科学家们一直想多了解一些有关太空的情况。

“You can stay here tonight. You needn't go back to London tonight.” the relatives said.

众亲戚说：“你今晚在这里过夜，不需要回伦敦了。”

The first computers were very large and bulky.

第一批计算机又大又笨。

二、在该名词前面加一些表示笼统数量的词以表复数含义。如：

A list of all the ways that diesel power is used would take pages.

一份列举柴油机所有用途的清单可能要占好几页（数页）。

As is known to all, air is a mixture of gases.

大家知道，空气是多种气体的混合物。

Our company's annual meetings were held in December.

我们公司的历届年会都是在十二月召开的。

三、在该名词前加数词。如：

The peony is the king of flowers.

牡丹是百花之王。

He half-closed his eyes as though trying to recall something.

他半闭双眼，好象在回想什么。
